It's definately different, but at the same time I think it plants the general roots of the entire band, with the strange new effects being used.

I agree it did plant the seed of unique sounds for new albums but I think piper and saucer full of secrets stand alone in the PF library because of one main reason...Syd. while what floyd did after syd is no less than amazing... those first two albums were truely bizarre masterpieces that challenged any persons perception of music

The truly bizarre Syd era is without a doubt one of the most experimental things I've heard in my life yet (this, and the electronic madness of Sebastian's Threnody )

On one hand, you have these mesmerizing childlike stories of scarecrows and gnomes and space, and on the other you have deep lyrics on change, space, and mentality. The child themes clash with the odd strange nature of the music itself. Heck, there are things you hear here that are on Dark Side , like the random words in "Flaming", and the odd samples of clocks at the end of "Bike".

I see your Pink Floyd and raise you a King Crimson.

Ah I remember a friend of mine doing some of the artwork for this album for a school project. I'm assuming since you posted this on this PF post, it's a psychedelic thing.

Lucky! Man, I've always thought of getting a record player, but haven't ever really gotten to it.

Something like that... More in the progressive vein, especially later iterations of the band, but the first record is firmly psyche rock. Heavy, but psychedelic.

Their signature song, live from '74 with the "heavy" lineup (power trio, no horns or keys, but an electric, distorted violin). Somehow it's more metal than Sabbath, who were starting up around the same time. Practically every metal band worth a flip these days cites Crimson as a major influence.
